September Reflections: Grief, Loss, and the Tides of Connection

September 2025

September arrives like a quiet reminder: the world keeps turning, the seasons keep shifting, and yet some of us feel paused, caught in the swell of memory and loss.

Recently, I lost my cousin. I thought I understood grief, but this one hit harder than I expected. Each loss seems to untether me further. Every person who leaves this earth, someone connected to my heart, leaves me feeling adrift, as if a piece of my internal map has been swept away.

Grief isn’t linear. It doesn’t follow calendars or social expectations. One day, you might walk through life carrying a quiet ache. The next, it crashes over you unexpectedly—a song, a smell, a conversation that echoes what has been lost. For me, September feels especially tender: the transition of seasons mirrors the transitions in our hearts, reminding us of the impermanence of life and the beauty of the connections we hold.

Learning to Sit With the Pain

It’s tempting to push grief away, to distract, to “keep going.” Yet, each wave asks to be felt, not resisted. Sitting with the pain allows us to honor the depth of our relationships and the love that remains. Grief is the price of connection, and in that sense, it is also a testament to how fully we have loved.

Finding Anchors in the Midst of Loss

When the world feels unmoored, small anchors can restore some balance:

  • Journaling your memories — writing letters to those you’ve lost or reflecting on moments that mattered.

  • Rituals of remembrance — lighting a candle, walking in a favorite place, or creating a small memorial.

  • Community and conversation — sharing your grief with someone you trust, even briefly.

  • Self-care and gentleness — allowing yourself rest, nourishing food, and moments of quiet.

Each step doesn’t erase the ache, but it reminds us that we are still here, still capable of love, still capable of moving forward while carrying the ones we’ve lost in our hearts.

September as a Season of Reflection

As leaves fall and the air cools, let this month be a pause. Let it be a space to honor loss, to feel connection, and to notice the small gifts still present in your life. Grief is not weakness—it is evidence of a heart that has loved deeply, that has connected, and that continues to carry those connections even across the boundaries of life and death.

If you are navigating loss this September, know you are not alone. At Mustard Seeds Wellness, I offer gentle practices, journaling prompts, and emotional support to help you sit with your grief and find grounding in the midst of life’s changes.
