“All the reasons that cause us to lose our peace are bad reasons.” – Fr. Jacques Philippe
October is a month of change. The days grow shorter, the air carries a chill, and nature begins her quiet turning inward. For many of us, these shifts—both outside and within—can stir up worry, restlessness, or even fear.
Fr. Jacques Philippe reminds us of something both simple and profound: when we lose our peace, it’s never for a “good” reason. Peace is not something the world gives or takes away. It is a gift rooted deep within, waiting for us to return to it again and again.
Think about it:
We lose our peace over things we cannot control.
We lose our peace because we expect perfection from ourselves or others.
We lose our peace when fear of the future overshadows the present moment.
And yet, God invites us to trust. To remember that every challenge is held within His hands. That even when we don’t understand, we are not alone.
This doesn’t mean ignoring the struggles of life. It means anchoring ourselves in something deeper than circumstances. When we notice our peace slipping, it’s a call to pause, breathe, and ask: What am I clinging to right now that is smaller than God’s love?
As autumn reminds us through its gentle surrender, peace comes when we let go. The trees don’t fight their falling leaves—they release them, trusting that new life will return in time.
This October, may we practice that same release. May we notice when worry, fear, or impatience steals our stillness. And may we return, again and again, to the peace that surpasses all understanding.
